What can you do with American Express reward points?

Convert American Express Reward points into Miles
This is probably the best option you have, convert your points into Airline Miles. Below is a list to which Airlines you may transfer your Amex points and convert them into Miles.

Convert American Express Reward points into Hotel points
You can transfer your American Express points to Hotel chains, where you collect points to get free nights.

Convert American Express Reward points into shopping coupons
With American Express you may transfer your Reward points as well into shopping coupons and buy products via the Amex homepage. This is usually not the best option compared to transferring the points to airline or even hotel points.
What can you do with the 12,000 Bonus Points?
As mentioned already you can convert this points into Airline Miles.
The examples below demonstrate what you would get if you transfer your Amex points to Miles & More (Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, Brussels Airlines) or Avios (British Airways and Iberia). But you can just as easily transfer your points to Emirates, Air France, Delta Airlines, etc ...
The 12,000 Amex bonus points that you will get with the Platinum card entitle you to 6,000 miles in the Miles & More program.
• Short-haul return flights in Europe in economy class with Lufthansa, Brussels Airlines, Swiss or Austrian are possible from 12,500 miles plus around € 100 in taxes and fees.
• For 10,000/15,000 miles (depending on the booking class) you get an upgrade to business class on an intra-European or intra-American flight on the outbound or inbound flight.
• If you travel in Premium Eco on a transatlantic flight or to South Africa, an upgrade to business class costs between 20,000 and 30,000 miles depending on the category of reservation, for one leg.
The 12,000 Amex bonus points you will get with the Platinum card will give you 8,000 Avios.

Short haul flights within Europe in economy class with Iberia or British Airways cost from 9000 Avios plus a few € in taxes and fees, for a return flight.

If you book a Premium economy ticket from London to New York and you want to upgrade one of the legs to business class, you will need 25,000 Avios. With the 20000 Avios you get from the card you will need only another 5,000 Avios.
For most of the reward tickets or upgrades you’ll need more than 6,000 Miles & More miles or 8,000 Avios, but this bonus will already give you a good kick-start.
With American Express you may also transfer your Reward points into shopping coupons and buy products via the Amex homepage. This is usually not the best option compared to transferring the points to airline or even hotel points.
However, for 12,500 Reward points you can buy vouchers worth €50 at Zalando, H&M, Dille & Kamille, Decathlon, Bol.com, FootLocker, etc. Vouchers worth €100 require 25,000 Reward points and €150 require 37,500. More info on the Reward Shop.
How much does the Amex Platinum card cost?
The card will cost you €65 a month.
It is possible to cancel the card at any time, but your bonus points might be waived if you cancel within the first year.
Is the Amex Platinum card the right one for you?
Yes, if you are travelling a few times a year, you always want lounge access (for you, your partner), direct access to Gold status with 4 major hotel chains, upgrades on hotel rooms and car rentals, excellent insurances and many other benefits. And of course if you want to collect Amex points, this can also be done together with your partners second free card.
Yes, if you travel regularly, but not enough to access the "Frequent flyer" status of airlines (access to lounges, fast lane, etc.) and hotel chains (upgrade, late check-out, etc.).
In all fairness, the cost of the card pays off very quickly, given the many benefits associated with it.
